It’s because of God that we have life. That we have today and everyday. It’s because of Him that we even get a cool day like Halloween. So,yes, I believe that Jesus is the reason for this “season” too.
I will have a big post on here later on why and how I celebrated Halloween as a Christian, but for now…
Here’s one of my Christian Halloween decorations I made with only a few supplies (Buttons, Ribbon, Scrapbook paper). The Lord says “Fear Not” many times throughout the Bible. Halloween is a perfect time to remember that God is in control and we should not fear the evil among us as long as we follow and trust in Him.
Here’s one of my drilled pumpkin carvings. It has a condensed version of the bible verse from Hebrews 6:19: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” My son went trick or treating as a sailor, so I thought this bible verse was fitting.
To stick with the “sailor” theme, my husband made a whale pumpkin using a shave technique (we didn’t go through the pumpkin all the way). I liked the effect it gave. We chose a whale too because the stem was humped over like an Orca. =)
Our last pumpkin was our son’s pumpkin and we wanted it to be traditional, but reflect him this Halloween. In other words, we wanted it to be personalized. Well, he had six teeth at the moment and when he smiled he had a major eye squint. Perfect pumpkin material!
Our town’s trick-or-treating was on the day before Halloween. I like to participate in not only passing out goodies, but also doing a little of our own trick-or-treating. That way we get best of both worlds and have a better chance to spread our joy, love, and light. So we passed out candy for an hour or so and then shut off the light and went to a few houses. This was his first time (as he’s only one years old), but he caught on very quickly. And, of course, he enjoyed his goodies when we got home and in our comfy PJ’s watching kid Halloween movies — Veggie Tales “Where is God when I’m Scared.”
Now that’s what I call “Trick-or-treat smell my feet” …silly boy!
Enjoying Candy…well almost…might be a problem here 😉
On actual Halloween night, we went to our church’s “Glow.” Basically, we offer a safe haven for parents and children who might be iffy about trick-or-treating door-to-door or who want to make Halloween as Christian as possible. We welcome anyone! We have food, games, music, and of course candy as prizes. Since his sailor costume was an old outfit when his dad was a baby, and I made the hat out of cheerios box, we decided to dress him in another outfit for this event. I made an Owl costume out of different fabrics and sewed them onto a onesie. The crocheted hat was bought off of etsy (I’m not that good!) and he can wear it all winter. =)
Here’s a video in his glory “helping” out (coming soon).
In the following days after Halloween, I came up with something called “Reverse Trick-or-Treating.” Meaning, I wanted to GIVE BACK to the people that gave to us. I want to teach my son to be thankful and gracious and to show him how to share God’s word on even what’s considered the “darkest day.” So, I created 5 thank you cards for the 5 houses we trick-or-treated at. 5 hopefully impacting thank you cards! I also made little magnets with scrapbook paper, and I created my own bible verse print-outs with verses that related to our Halloween theme this year (but also to how we can overcome the “evil” of Halloween and be a light to all), to give them as a little gift. Anonymous gift! Which means we had to go late at night and stick these on people’s doorsteps or in mailboxes. It was quite exhilarating! Almost got caught twice and our way back to our house done kids found there’s and were so excited running to their mom. I can’t wait to make this a tradition every year as we go to DIFFERENT houses spreading more joy, love, and uniqueness.
Since we only went to 5 houses, we didn’t get a lot of candy. But one day I’d like to be able to donate all the extra candy to people in need. This year though, we just used our candy for our little family Halloween party with my sister. We did a caramel apple bar, dips, and fruit the weekend after Halloween. Love fall foods!
I can’t wait to put all my old and new ideas for Halloween 2015 into action. Including my Contemporary Christian Halloween song playlist to use throughout the month, at parties, or while passing out those goodies on the big day! So stay tuned! See all my Christian Halloween Posts.
